Inner Speed Demons

Inner Speed Demons was a 30-minute speed write. It's half flash fiction and half joke. Enjoy!

“I drive fast, like all the time,” Tom finally confessed. He turned away from the priest as if he could hide in the corner of the confessional. “We’re talking way over the speed limit. Is that bad?”

Father Bradshaw answered with a question. “What do you think?”

“It is. I feel guilty, obviously, but… I don’t know, I just have to feel the curves. I have to feel my car struggle a bit, you know? Like on the back way here. That’s such a perfect winding road. I…” Tom stopped himself. Shaking his head, he forced himself to continue, utterly embarrassed, “This is going to sound so dumb; I commentate my driving like I’m in some sort of race.”

The priest tried to suppress his laughter, pretending to clear his throat, but Tom was not deceived. “I’d laugh too in your place. It’s so dumb.”

“Sorry… What’s the fastest you’ve gone down Lakeview Road?”

Tom hung his head. His answer was barely audible. “Ninety.”

“I still have you by five,” Father Bradshaw admitted. “Don’t try to beat it. I’ve seen your Honda.”

Tom perked up slightly but acknowledged the priest’s point. There was envy in his tone. “And I’ve seen your Porsche 911.”

“Go, my son, and drive no faster.”
